Top Ten Tuesday is a meme started over at The Broke and the Bookish where they give us a topic and we give our top ten.
This week: Words/Topics that will make me pick up/buy a book. I opted instead to do topics that interest me in a book because I don't have any insta-buy topics since I'm trying to be better.
1. Victorian England
I love Victorian England and as soon as I hear a book is set there I make a mental note about it. It's becoming even bigger as Steampunk continues to rise so I can't buy all of them.
I love retellings of fairy tales and myths and folk lore. Or even retellings of classic books. I am far more likely to buy or note a book that is a retelling.
3. Literary references
If it openly makes a literary reference in the title or description I will make a note, as long as it's a reference I know...obviously.
4. Forbidden Romance
I know...I know. But I get sort of picky about which forbidden romances I like and why they are forbidden but I am usually intrigued.
5. Road trips
I love a good road trip. Some of the most exciting things can happen when people are stuck in close quarters for extended periods of time.
You may be seeing a trend. I love book about characters who love books. I usually feel a kinship with the characters instantly. Any character can read but I love the ones who really worship the written word.
7. ConspiraciesI love century-long conspiracies that have all of these famous people and landmarks. They're usually so clever.
8. Geeky Characters
There are a lot of these. But if I hear that a character has the same geeky quirks that I do, (Doctor Who, Harry Potter) and the author goes to pains to make them seem realistically geeky and not just surface geeky I'll be all over it.
9. Close sibling relationships
When I see a book mention siblings, specifically sisters I usually take note. Especially after Where Things Come Back I'm always looking for books that show how amazing the bond between siblings are.
I mean real fate, not like 'I have been forced into this' but real, 'fate has a tapestry' stuff. I love the different ways that can be used and done.
There are my ten topics or traits that interest me. They aren't insta-buys but they are definite take notes. Are any of these on your list?
